Indhold

Globalization has been one of the buzz words of the late 20 th and early 21 st centuries. It is often associated with Americanization, a term coined in the early 20 th century but most prominent in the 30 or so years after World War Two. Yet Americanization has not simply been replaced by globalization, nor are the two identical. Developing some of the themes introduced in the 1 st year BA American History & Society and Nation, State, Globalization courses, this valgfag looks at the relationships between the two.

Concentrating on developments in recent decades, the course will explore various dimensions of globalization and Americanization. It will address the post-Cold War global reach of US state power, whether in the form of military force or of political influence. It will consider the pervasive influence of American business practices and multi-national corporations. In addition to this so-called ‘hard power,' the course will also deal with Uncle Sam's ‘soft power' projection, such as the international impact of the nation's cultural expression (from Coca-Cola via Nike to Hollywood) and its global ideological presence (‘free markets and democracy'). While handling ideas and institutions, it will also consider the human dimension, looking in particular at how globalization and Americanization are linked via migration. Last but not least, the course will investigate resistance to these processes, both within and beyond the United States: why is the leading national agent of globalization in some ways so resistant to its logics, manifestations and consequences?

These diverse subjects will be integrated conceptually and historically. In theoretical terms we will add to familiar readings of globalization some tools for understanding Americanization, such as hegemony and imperialism. Historically, we will explore how contemporary globalization has been shaped by past eras, notably the Cold War.

Litteratur

Required Set Text

There will be one set text for this course, which all students will be expected to obtain: Bruce Mazlish, Nayan Chanda and Kenneth Weisbrode (eds), The Paradox of a Global USA (Stanford: Stanford University Press, 2007), ISBN 10: 0-8047-5156-0; ISBN 13: 978-0-8047-5156-8. This book will be available from Geneviève Munck International Book Service (Klostergade 33, 8000 Århus C; telephone: 86 19 50 42; email ). It will be supplemented by a reading compendium.

Suggested Preliminary Reading

The globalization literature is enormous; the Americanization literature is extensive. Books dealing with both topics, though, are much less common. Though bookshop copies of the books have not been ordered by me, and you are not required to buy them, students are encouraged to read one or more, particularly before the course begins. The course itself will, however, be keyed to the Mazlish book listed above.

Niall Ferguson, Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire (2004)

Joseph Nye, The Paradox of American Power (2001)

Andrew Bacevich, American Empire: The Realities and Consequences of US Diplomacy (2002)

Michael Mann, Incoherent Empire (2003)
