LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The learning objectives are that the participants of this course should be able to
• describe and do simple statistical tests of population parameters based on one and two samples under different distribution assumptions
• describe and evaluate confidence intervals for population parameters based on one and two samples under different distribution assumptions
• describe and apply stratified sampling
• describe and evaluate goodness-of-fit tests on one-dimensional and two-dimensional contingency tables
• formulate a simple or multiple linear regression model for business or economics data and do estimation of the parameters
• apply hypothesis testing concerning the parameters of the regression model and derive forecasts based on the regression model
• evaluate the fit of the regression model by plots of residuals (diagnostics)
• apply their own simple statistical analysis on data describing a business problem.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
The course gives an introduction to statistical methods and data analysis with special relation to business applications.
1. Theory of estimation and testing hypotheses, revisited
2. Applied estimation and testing hypotheses
3. Stratification and cluster sampling
4. Tests for comparing two populations
5. Analysis of qualitative data
6. Simple and multiple linear regression analysis.
REQUIRED COURSES (progression):
Principles of Statistics
LECTURER: Viggo Høst
TEACHING METHOD:
The lectures will present the statistical methods, and the applications of the methods will be illustrated by examples. In the exercises the students will work on solving specific statistical problems. Excel will be used as statistical computer program.
TEACHING LANGUAGE:
Danish.
LITERATURE:
Nikolaj Malchow-Møller and Allan Würtz: Indblik i statistik - for samfundsvidenskab, Gyldendal 2010, Chapters 11-13 & 15-18. A total of approx. 160 pages
FORM OF ASSESSMENT:
Two hours written exam. For admission to the exam a compulsory assignment should be answered and approved.
EXAMINATION AIDS ALLOWED: All - except any means of electronic communication including mobile phones, calculators and PCs. A simple calculator will be provided to the students at the exam.
