On completion of the module, the student will be able to, on a scientific basis:

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of educational systems and education policy developments in other countries;
  • Analyse comparatively educational policies and practices in different national and socio-cultural contexts;
  • Discuss and assess independently different theories and methods in comparative education as well as different positions and arguments on current educational developments across countries;
  • Discuss - and hereby synthesise - a wide range of relevant material and sources;
  • Communicate a comprehensive and accurate response to a selected topic under comparative investigation.

Indhold

This module will introduce students to the theory and practice of Comparative Education through the exploration of issues, theoretical paradigms and methods used in the field as well as through the investigation of contemporary educational developments taking place in national and transnational contexts.

The module will begin by exploring what it is to think and research comparatively and what can be learned from the comparative investigation of education. Students will have the opportunity to go through different traditions, systems, policies and practices of education, as they have and they are being developed in different national and socio-cultural contexts.

Particular attention will be given to the actual conduct of educational comparison through the study of various theories and methods of comparative research. Students will be invited to reflect on the selection of methodological approaches, levels of analysis, and case studies and to know about examples of systematic and contextualized comparison. Opposite examples, such as, for instance, cases of misused international comparisons, will also be considered.

Finally, the module will investigate contemporary education policies formulated in individual countries but also by major international organisations, whose role has been particularly strengthened by globalisation.

Undervisnings- og arbejdsform

The module will be taught through lectures and discussion groups. In the lectures, students will have the opportunity to listen to a specialised presentation and engage into dialogue with the lecturer. Students will also be invited to make presentations and analytical remarks about the education system of their country of origin.

In the discussion groups, students will reflect on some text(s) which will have read beforehand. All such texts are included in the modulex's compendium or are available on the Blackboard and are indicated in the programme as ‘reading for the session'. Please, note that this reading is necessary for the student to participate in the discussion group, as the discussion will be based on this reading. For this purpose, students are given, under the heading ‘preparation', some guidelines, themes or questions which they have to consider when they read the designated text(s). Students are expected to make every effort to exercise their capacity for critical understanding during both their preparation and their participation in the sessions.
