Analytic philosophy was one of the most important movements of the twentieth century. Selected aspects of the development of early analytic philosophy from Gottlob Frege through Bertrand Russell to Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico- Philosophicus are studied. A number of fundamental themes and their interconnections are examined. Topics to be covered may include logicism, distinction between sense and reference, theory of definite descriptions, the picture theory of meaning, limits of language and philosophy, metaphysics of the Tractatus , and nonsense . The course is of particular relevance to students interested in the history of twentieth century philosophy, analytic philosophy, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of logic, and mathematics. There are no prerequisites but competence in elementary logic is desirable.
