Formål

In the evaluation, emphasis is placed on the extent to which the student:

• demonstrates insight into the role of meaning in language, in particular the ways 'meaning' can change over time;
• demonstrates understanding of and ability to apply linguistic argumentation to problems relating to semantic change, esp. in the context of grammaticalization theory;
• demonstrates insight into the relation between grammar and use.

Indhold

Meaning is a fundamental aspect of verbal communication and since languages (i.e. systems of verbal communication) are dynamic entities, the meanings of linguistic forms and structures do not remain the same either.

The aim of this advanced course is to familiarize the students with some specific types of meaning change. We will focus on three kinds of semantic change in particular: [i] change that results in scope increase (involving metonymic change), [ii] change ‘from space to time' (metaphoric change), and [iii] change that results in opposite meanings (instances of ‘flip-flop').

The course will begin with some overview articles and case studies. Subsequently we will try to give a more principled or systematic account of these types of semantic change.

BA i Lingvistik, BA med suppleringsuddannelse i Lingvistik eller tilsvarende.

Undervisnings- og arbejdsform

Undervisningen består af en kombination af underviserens forelæsninger, studerendes oplæg og diskussioner.

Studerende forventes at deltage aktivt i undervisningen med tilkendegivelse af overvejelser gjort i forbindelse med læsning, holde oplæg, og deltage regelmæssigt i uformelle diskussioner om behandling af relevante fænomener.
