The purpose of this 2 week intensive summer-school is to initiate studies of the impact of globalization on contemporary culture and identity in the nor-thern countries, studied by the new art forms developing since the 1990's. Recently new global forms of distribution and reception by way of the inter-net has influenced the concept of the North, since news, political issues as well as art has reached a new global public not familiar with a concept of the North and its different national agendas, created historically by many forms of political and economic relationships. Today the Nordic countries form a geographical region amongst other regions seen from a global perspective (from the outside), and this certainly has influenced the different Nordic cul-tural and political public arenas. Many types of (self)critical reflections of the concept of the North has appeared during the last 15 years. This summer-school will study these manifestations within the broad arena of the art scene in order to diagnose this transition from a national and Nordic public arena to a global one.
The contemporary Nordic art scenes have developed distinctly towards performativity and interactivity. Political happenings, street art, and different kinds of events has re-vitalised contemporary culture producing political and ethical reactions, since these art projects often consider questions of identity and enunciation. Examples are Danish artist Claus Beck-Nielsen's democra-cy project documented in newspapers and book publications. It has even re-sulted in an on-going trial. The questions asked on democracy also involve the production of individual as well as collective identity. Also Danish artist Kristian von Hornsleth, who organized a community based art project in Uganda focuses on identity and art in a project that turned out to become a scandal in Denmark. In Uganda it was banned. The political reception is part of the project as in several other action projects from the last decade. The Swedish-Norwegian Hakki-project, which sets out to consolidate local identity ends up negotiating cultural identity as such. These and similar art projects will be studied in the light of new theories of globalization and art since their discursive and aesthetic manifestations clearly includes the viewer/ user in questioning Nordic and national identities.
