Formål

The objective of the course is to provide the basis for engineers to create technical solutions to society and agricultural problems without compromising soil functions.

Indhold

This course will focus on the primary threats to the functions of the soil and how and why processes affect the soil and influence the human society. It will cover soil physics including a description of the soil as a three-phase system. The properties of water, the theory of capillarity, and the principles of soil water content and potential will be presented. The flow of water, the transport of solutes, and the movement and exchange of gases will be studied, and the physical principles of soil temperature and heat conductivity will be presented. The fundamental concepts of mechanical stress and strength of soil bodies will be covered including stress-strain relations. The structure of the soil and the concepts of aggregation will be discussed. The properties of the colloidal fraction in the soil will be introduced and the fundamentals of the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum will be presented

Læringsmål

By the end of the course you will be able to:

Explain the functions of the soil (e.g. as medium for plant growth, as a filtration system, as a physical medium for human activity)

Describe the nature and role of soils in the environment

Carry out quantitative analyses of soil physical processes

Explain the concepts of soil moisture and temperature and their importance in local and global hydrological cycles

Describe the physical properties of the soil and how the properties can be affected by agricultural management
