The word "ethics" has been used a great deal during the last 20 years or so by literary and cultural theorists, reflecting what has been seen as a general "(re)turn to the ethical" throughout the humanities. But "ethics" is a controversial word. Some people are suspicious of it, and sometimes with good reason. Others would say that it represents a side of what it is to be a critic, theorist or intellectual that goes without saying. Two things are clear: that there is a process at work within the academic world that is making many thinkers address the ethical simultaneously, and that, in doing so, they are pursuing a range of distinct and sometimes contradictory projects.
This course is designed to explore both of these phenomena: the appearance of a common endeavour, and the dispersal of thought along different ethical paths. In the process, we will try to figure out just how much literature can and should be connected with debates about right and wrong, good and bad. You will be introduced to relevant concepts drawn from philosophers and theorists including Aristotle, Hobbes, Nietzsche, Derrida, Emmanuel Lévinas and Martha Nussbaum. "Literature" will be broadly defined in this course: primary sources will range from Renaissance plays, such as Webster's Duchess of Malfi (in your Norton Anthology of English Literature ) and Shakespeare's Othello , through Conrad's great novel of adventure, disaster and moral crisis, Lord Jim , to recent American TV series, such as The Wire and House .
