This seminar focuses on Danish-English and English-Danish translation, and on the translation of both fiction and non-fiction. We will explore the role of the translator - how free or creative can translators be, and what are the limits or parameters which translators need to observe? We will also discuss the issue of ownership in translation - who is the owner of translated texts, and what does this mean as far as the role of the translator is concerned? In other words, are translators machines or communicators? The overall aim will be to raise awareness about what we are actually doing when we translate from one language into another. The texts we will consider and evaluate include translations of fiction (old and new), translations of poetry and drama, translations of tourist material and translations of newspaper articles. We will also briefly consider the role and usefulness of machine translation (Google Translate, for instance).
The theoretical background of the course will be based on Understanding Translation by Anne Schjoldager (Academica, 2008), and this is the only book you will need to buy. We will discuss Schjoldager's ideas on defining translation, categorising translation, macrostrategies, microstrategies, professional ethics and skopos theory. We will also touch on Henrik Gottlieb's ideas regarding screen translation (including subtitling and dubbing) and Ida Klitgård's ideas regarding literary translation - all explained in the same book.
Bestået bacheloruddannelse.
