Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
This course will examine conflict in Shakespeare's plays. Beginning with Titus Andronicus , Shakespeare's first, most violent and explicit tragedy, we will reflect upon how these performed hostilities are keyed to the conflicts of the playwright's immediate moment, most notably the wars of religion. In this and three other plays, we will then compare how these scenes of violence are translated for audiences in our own day, in geographical spaces and cultural contexts far from the early modern England for whom the plays were first performed. This course thus aims to bring together two current threads of Shakespeare studies: Shakespeare in his religious context, and Global Shakespeares (how his plays are being adapted and appropriated around the globe).
Religious rituals-their objects, prayers and gestures keyed to specific religious and cultural identities-were a major point of cultural conflict in Reformation England, as they were elsewhere in Europe. They were scrutinized by the state (and one's neighbours) and could potentially secure a lengthy prison sentence or even execution. These will therefore provide an important focus. We will examine how these contentious items, words, and practices are used and abused in Shakespeare; how relics, prayer beads and even Eucharistic wine are frequently mentioned only to be fragmented or displaced, swept ‘behind the door' as Puck says in A Midsummer Night's Dream . How are these scenes ‘translated' for current productions in ‘modern' and ‘post-modern' society? How are they adapted for specific local concerns? By comparing productions on film and written accounts of live performances from Japan, South Africa, India and elsewhere we will gain a better understanding of what ‘Shakespeare' is today, in our understanding of the playwright in history, as well as how his plays help us articulate a response to the world in which we live.
Likely plays to be studied are Romeo and Juliet , Macbeth , and Othello or possibly King Lear.

Essential texts:
You should obtain the Norton Shakespeare (Complete Works), Stephen Greenblatt, et al., eds. 2 nd ed. (New York: WW Norton & Co, 2008), ISBN 978 0 393 11135 4. It is more economical to buy the complete works, and useful if you think you will want to study Shakespeare in the future. It is, however, a weighty tome, so if you prefer smaller more portable editions please purchase the Arden editions of the individual plays:
Suggested Preliminary Reading/Preparation:
Students should read the following articles before the course begins to familiarise themselves with the main concepts (available on the FirstClass e-mail/conferencing system):
