In the final evaluation it will be taken into account to what extent the student:
- is able to identify and analyse a cultural topic relevant to European integration;
- demonstrates knowledge of the literature discussed in the course;
- demonstrates knowledge of the theoretical and methodological issues introduced during the course;
- is able to apply these theories and methodologies to an empirical material;
- has knowledge of the relevance of culture to European integration
The objective is to provide the student with knowledge of and skills in analysing a cultural topic relevant to European integration and cooperation. Through the reading and practical exercises, the discipline will provide the student with an understanding of the roles culture plays in relation to the integration processes in Europe and to the cooperation between Europeans.
This year's supplementary course in European cultural analysis is entitled "The other Europeans". The course explores the ways that various media in Europe (tv, written media, film etc) represents self and other in a European context.
We will look at stereotypes in regards to food, sex and sports, at East-West-representations, at immigrants, Eurovision, honour killings, tourists and cartoons.
The basic premise of the course is that most people in Europe get their knowledge about 'other Europeans' through the media and that media representations matter to engagement and interest in the integration processes in Europe.
The course is taught at undergraduate level and gives 15 ECTS.
There are classes on Wednesdays and instructor classes on Tuesdays. First day of class is Wednesday in week 6.
