Colonial Empires and their Aftermath: A study of the legacies of imperial rule in Southeast Asia, India and Africa
Introduction: This course will explore the debates surrounding colonial rule in India, Africa and Southeast Asia and the ways in which these societies transformed under its administration. The field of post-colonial studies represents an area of constant debate about the kind of dominance exercised by the colonial power and the ways in which it subjugated the colonial subject. In this course, we will be looking at both the imperialist aspects of the colonial project as well as ways that colonized societies were active in appropriating Western forms of knowledge to meet their own ends. I will be sharing case examples from my work on the British legacy in colonial Malaya but students are free to pick their own case studies for their assignments.
This course is open to students from History, European Studies, International Studies, Sociology, Literature and Anthropology.
