Formål

The purpose og the lectures is to enable the students to:

  • describe the structure of the international legal system,
  • explain the fundamental concepts og international law,
  • account for the relationship between domestic law and international law,
  • apply international rules and principles to present-day international issues,
  • present international law topics in a clear and professional legal language.

Indhold

The global development entails new opportunities and new challenges for the international community. Originally defined as a set of rules to govern the interaction between states, public international law provides a regulatory framework to deal with this development. Consequently, an understanding of the principles of public international law is fundamental for anyone who is acting internationally, whether as a government representative in international matters, or as an international specialist in a private company, a trade organisation or a non-governmental organization.

The course will provide the students with a basic knowledge of how the international legal system works, including its relationship with domestic law. On this basis, the students will be able to apply international rules and principles to pertinent issues in current international relations. In addition, the students will be able to conduct a critical analysis of both established and developing rules of international law.

Selected topics to be studied:

  • The sources of international law.
  • The subjects of international law.
  • The law of treaties.
  • The relationship between international law and domestic law.
  • Jurisdiction and immunity.
  • State responsibility.
  • International human rights law.
  • International humanitarian law.
  • Use of force under international law.
  • Law of the sea.

Active student participation is expected.
