Formål
This seminar will analyze the philosophical ideas underpinning the modern international law system. It will look at the formative influence of central thinkers on the international system and the nation state.
By the end of the course, the student should be able to:

Recognize and describe basic philosophical theories on global justice.

Recognize and describe philosophical theories on how fundamental values are determined and how they relate to each other.

Describe and analyze the role international jurisprudence plays in conflicts between nations.
-
Describe and analyze the concept of an international community.
-
Give an account of and analyze the relationship between international justice and power.
-
Analyse concrete cases, such as the interrelationship between international jurisprudence and refugees, humanitarian interventions or freedom of speech.

Present the acquired knowledge and skills in a reasonably coherent English.

Global justice (Realism, particularism, nationalism and cosmopolitarism)

Problems of legitimacy of international courts and tribunals.

Global law: sovereignty, jurisdiction and enforceability.

An international rule of law, law making and judicial independence.

Substantive and procedural international law.

Ethics and Justice: International human rights.

Undervisnings- og arbejdsform
The course will usually consist of a general introduction to the day´s topic by the lecturer, before moving on to a more interactive part, where the students should partake in discussion of the topic.
