This course will go through what is involved in conducting ethnographic fieldwork and what kinds of knowledge can be acquired in the field. It will discuss traditional field methods as well as more recent methodological developments, with an emphasis on field research on religion.
Some of the main themes will include: Preparing for the field: How to select a research topic, choose a field site, design a study, and write a research proposal. In the field: participant observation; qualitative and quantitative methods; field notes and the organization of data; practicalities of being in the field; ethical issues and anthropological codes of conduct. After the field: How to analyze data and write up results.
Exemplary cases of how to do and how not to do fieldwork will be discussed. Audio-visual material from the field will often be presented and discussed in the class. Part of the course material will be in the form of films/documentaries.
Students will have the opportunity to present ideas on their current, future or potential projects, and/or discuss methodological concerns involved in conducting fieldwork and reading. There will be no final examination.
