Formål
The seminar module offers a more extensive and more thorough analysis of a topic from within political science. To this end, the seminar module provides an overview and a critical discussion of the literature and the issues relevant for the topic of the seminar.
The objectives for this module are:

Recognize and describe the basic features of the international political economy
-
Give an account of the major currents and most important theories within the field
-
Demonstrate how theories are able to guide empirical research
-
Outline the most important problems with regard to international regulation and suggest solutions
-
Outline the most important conflicts and dividing lines within the international political economy
-
Suggest analytical strategies for studying these problems
-
Demonstrate an ability to critically analyze relevant problems in international political economy
The course will be especially relevant to students with a global outlook and an interest in international economic issues or North-South relations.
Indhold
International political economy addresses the many complex issues that characterizes the interaction between politics and economics in the international system: relations between states and markets, between states and international institutions, global corporations, NGOs, financial crises, trade frictions and many others. With increasing globalization these complex interactions have become ever more important and they impact on virtually every economic, social and political event on the globe. An important dividing line in the international political economy concerns the relationship between the rich and well-organized states and the poorer members of the world community. This North-South divide continues to characterize the international political economy, but new divisions and new alliances across these traditional dividing lines are constantly emerging. The course will introduce the main theories in the field; outline the historical emergence of an integrated and globalized world economy with a particular emphasis on the post-World War II period and its evolving governance structure, i.e. the main international organizations, major international regimes and the most important current problems. Among other issues we shall discuss the global management of (or lack of management of) the financial crisis, the emergence of new important powers like the BRIC countries and the increasing importance of large international corporations and the attempts to discipline and regulate their behaviour. The organization of the international regimes for trade, aid, finance and investments and the role played by major institutions like the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) will form a central part of the course.

Of the nine seminars the student has to pass as part of the MA degree, at least six seminar modules have to be in political science.

Undervisnings- og arbejdsform
The seminar module requires active participation of students. At the beginning of the seminar module the lecturer and the students agree on specific "activity requirements" that the students have to fulfill.
Classes will be a mixture of lectures, student presentations and group discussions.
Litteratur
The module compendium consists of about 1,200 pages.
The final list of readings will be ready at the start of the semester.
O'Brien, Robert, and Marx Williams,
Global Political Economy. Evolution and Dynamics
, 3rd Edition, Palgrave Macmillan 2010 will be used as a core text. It will be supplemented by a selection of journal articles, book chapters and extracts from reports from key international organizations.
