Formål

The seminar module offers a more extensive and more thorough analysis of a topic from within political science. To this end, the seminar module provides an overview and a critical discussion of the literature and the issues relevant for the topic of the seminar.

This seminar is intended to give students knowledge of theories and conceptualizations of identity, nationalism, the roles of religion and secularism, and integration policies and to enable students to 1) actively use these to analyze existing societal dynamics and policy to deal with increasingly diverse societies, and 2) evaluate their usefulness for understanding society and politics. Upon completion of the seminar, it is expected that participants will be able to explain, evaluate the usefulness of and use the following for conducting social and political analysis:

  • leading theories of the development of European nationalisms
  • concepts of identity, ethnic identity and national identity in relation to one another and to political-territorial structures;
  • theories of intergroup relations
  • concepts of religion and secularism in politics
  • relevant research on ethnic and integration politics in both historically pluralistic and immigrant-receiving societies
  • European integration and citizenship policies
  • methods of studying identity and integration

Indhold

Western European states have experienced successive waves of labor and refugee immigration over the past half-century that have posed new challenges: how can the-se new publics, often culturally and religiously distinct from the majority populations, be integrated into the established social and political communities? Relations of immigrant minorities are often characterized by social, political and economic inequality, and religious and ethnic difference give opportunity for fears of the loss of national identity and of threats like religious extremist violence to influence debate and policy. What are the natures of these "national communities" that immigrants have come to, and what do we know about personal and ethnic identity that can help us understand how individuals and groups integrate into or withdraw from receiving societies? Literature on nationalism, identity, religion/secularism, intergroup relations, integration processes and integration politics in a variety of contexts will inform our theoretical frameworks for how to study integration processes and policy.

The course will include study and discussion of integration of diverse populations in terms of the sociological processes that constitute it and of the political and social challenges it presents to modern societies, with a focus on Western Europe. Over 9 weeks of lectures and class discussion, we will examine existing research on immigrant integration and current state integration policies through lenses shaped by theories and work on national and ethnic identity; intergroup relations and superordinate (uniting national) identities; religion and secularism in modern societies; methods of studying and measuring identity and integration; integration and citizenship politics in immigrant-receiving societies; and Muslims in Europe. With its focus on identity as key to understanding integration processes, the seminar examines the role that minority and national identities interact in established national contexts. In other words: when and how do minorities who differ ethnically, culturally or religiously from majority populations become part of receiving societies, especially when these societies have already formed consensuses around questions of national identity, religion-state relations, and ways of life? In light of existing literature, we will discuss how best to analyze identity and integration, and students will be prepared and encouraged to use these concepts and tools to conduct independent analysis on a case of their choice for the final paper.

Faglige forudsætninger

Of the nine seminars the student has to pass as part of the MA degree, at least six seminar modules have to be in political science.

Underviser

Emily Cochran Bech

Prøveform

The assessment method is home assignment.

External examiner/Graded marking.

Undervisnings- og arbejdsform

The seminar module requires active participation of students. At the beginning of the seminar module the lecturer and the students agree on specific "activity requirements" that the students have to fulfill.

Instruction will be based on different bodies of thought and research on aspects of nation, identity and integration processes. Theoretical perspectives will be presented through lectures and class discussion, and the class will engage in evaluation of current research using the theories and concepts presented in the literature. Students will be expected to have read the course material before the corresponding class sessions and to check the course site on AULA regularly, and will be asked during class sessions to participate in evaluation of both theory and research.

The seminar will meet 9 times for regular class sessions. Two course sessions (weeks 8-9) will be set aside for group meetings with the instructor for preliminary feedback on research paper proposals and initial drafts. Students will be expected to have read, and be ready to comment on, the paper drafts of the other students in their paper discussion groups.

Litteratur

The module compendium consists of about 1,200 pages.

Concerning the home assignment the student agrees with the lecturer the reading which is relevant for the research question of the home assignment. The reading forms part of the 1,200 pages which students have to read for each seminar module.

The literature list below is preliminary; a final list will be posted on AULA and distributed at the first class.  The books by Gellner (1983) and Howard (2009) are recommended for purchase for the course and are available at Politologisk Bogformidling. Unless otherwise noted, all journal articles are available through the Aarhus University Library website (with direct links from the course site on AULA); however, please be aware that you usually need to access them from within the university's network (if you want to access from elsewhere, try gaining remote access to articles through the Royal Library website (kb.dk)).
