The participants will after the course have insight into wireless sensor networks, including applications, architectures, protocols and sensor hardware nodes. The course aims to convey a knowledge of design and robust implementation and deployment of wireless sensor networks, such train the participants to plan and implement wireless sensor networks.
Ambient Intelligence is the vision that technology will become invisibly embedded in our natural surroundings. From the technical standpoint, ambient intelligence means distributed electronic intelligence connected through networks. The emerging field of wireless sensor networks presents many opportunities and challenges in this space and will be the base for this course. The students will be introduced to wireless sensor network applications, protocols and architectures. Topics like scaleability, reliability, and security will be covered. Focus will also be on hardware/electronics nodes (sensors and actuators, RF links, uProcessors, DSPs, energy scavenging and storage, packaging) with special attention on ultra low power designs and methods required for such WSN systems. Finally, the techniques covered can be extended to other circuits and systems in many application spaces, e.g. health monitoring and autonomous implantable electronics where very low power consumption and diminishing form-factors are key factors.
