This module will explore the development of the Orthodox theology in the 20 th century. The module combines historical with doctrinal approach to the Orthodox themes. The patristic foundation of the modern Orthodox theology will be especially underlined.
The historical approach to the modern orthodox theology offers an overview on the most important figures and events in the modern Orthodox theology, commencing from Dostoyevsky and the Russian religious renaissance, the establishment of the Institute of St Serge in Paris and the formation of Florovsky's Neo-Patristic Synthesis to the rise of national theologies, including Anglo-American Orthodox theology and the theology of personhood of John Zizioulas. The dogmatic or doctrinal approach to Orthodox theology will shed light on the Orthodox perspective regarding the Trinitarian theology, Christology, the theology of energies, the theology of icons and ecclesiology.
The module will be an attempt to introduce students to the Orthodox theology nowadays and to examine how the Christian tradition of Early and Medieval Church shaped the modern Orthodox perspective.
