The objective of this course is to reach a comprehensive understanding of the time, the texts and the theology of Origen of Alexandria. During the course we will seek answers to questions such as: How does Origen's texts and theology reflect his context (chronological, geographical, literary, and philosophical)? How are the literary expressions of his theology (literary genres)? What is the main topics of his theology (God, creation, Man in relation to God and the world, christology, soteriology, eschatology).
Registration deadline on 15th March 2011
This course will study Origen from different perspectives in order to reach a comprehensive and deep understanding of his theology. In order to understand his theology it is necessary to study his context and how he expresses his theology in oral literary form. We will therefore study the theological, philosophical, political and ecclesiastical traditions which surround Origen in Alexandria and Caesarea. We will also study which literary traditions and ‘genres' he make use of. All this is, however, only the background for studying the theology of Origen as it is expressed in his own texts.
