Formål
The objectives are that the students after having participated in the course should be able to:
-
Apply classical public choice theory to the design of basic decision making institutions.
-
Describe, analyse and reflect on the design of and effect of institutions in general.
-
Describe, analyse and reflect on basic social choice problems.
-
Apply the tools of public choice to the analysis of selected policy problems covered in the new papers included.
Indhold
The course has four main goals:
-
to teach the student the classical public choice theory of committees and voting.
-
to teach the student the theory of bureaucracy, rent seeking and capture.
-
to discuss the theories of public vs private production and the size of the government.
-
to introduce the normative theories of social choice. Also the course will present some new papers in the field.

Lectures. The students are encouraged to write seminars in the fields

Dennis C. Mueller: Public Choice III. Cambridge UP, 2003, Approx. 500 pages
It will be supplemented with approx. 100 pages of new papers chosen at the European Public Choice Conference in Izmir March 2010, which will be specified before the beginning of the semester

Oral exam for 20 minutes with 20 minutes' preparation.
