After World War I Hungarian became one of the biggest minority languages in Europe. Due to various historical-political circumstances in the last 90 years Hungarian minority languages have developed in a semi-independent situation from standard Hungarian of Hungary. The case of Hungarian in Slovakia could shed light on this unique sociolinguistic development. First the seminar will address the issue of the concept of pluricentric languages from a sociolinguistic point of view, then it analyses different aspects of Hungarian in Slovakia.
